An Athens firefighter was killed last week in an off-duty accident, according to various media reports. The Red & Black reports that Matt Hughes died while working an “off-duty job” on Feb. 20. The newspaper learned of Hughes death after the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services sent out a press statement.
“We would like to send our prayers and condolences to Matt’s family and friends,” the statement said. “R.I.P. Brother.”
Athens-Clarke County Police Public Relations Officer Eppi Rodriguez told the media that the accident happened in Jackson County.
Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services stated that they intend to share the funeral arrangements for Hughes once they are made available.
The Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services also posted a Facebook update on their Facebook page last Tuesday morning, letting their followers know that Hughes had died.
“After a tragic accident yesterday while working an off duty job, Firefighter II Matt Hughes has passed away. We would like to send our prayers and condolences to Matt’s family and friends. We will post funeral arrangements once they are known. R.I.P. Brother,” the post read.
Monday night, ACC Fire and Emergency Services put out a call for prayers on Facebook with a post that read the following:
“Tonight, we’d like to ask you all for your prayers as one of our own, FFII Matt Hughes, was seriously injured in an off-duty accident earlier today. Please keep Matt and his family in your prayers during this difficult time. Thank you.”
No other details had been released about the incident as of Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 21.
