Athens Gets New Restaurants as New UGA Students Arrive

As students begin first semester at the University of Georgia, there are multiple new restaurants they will be able to enjoy along with Athens residents.  At least three new restaurants have opened their doors in town over the summer, including two new sweet spots, according to an article in the Red & Black.

Zombie Coffee & Donuts opened in downtown Athens at the end of April and they offer a twist on the classic coffee and donut combination. This “have it your way” shop will put the power in the customers’ hands allowing them to choose exactly what they want on their donut, according to My Athens is. If you want a strawberry and chocolate glazed donut topped with walnuts, bananas and bacon, you can have it and more made on-the-spot to enjoy with a piping hot cup of coffee. The Athens location also includes self-serve frozen yogurt for your donut-sandwiching needs.

Another sweet spot opened in Athens this year. Cinnaholic is a gourmet cinnamon roll shop that claims it’s “not your typical cinnamon roll shop.” Cinnaholic is 100 percent vegan and offers customers a wide array of flavors. All of the shop’s products are free of dairy, egg, cholesterol and lactose.

When it comes to savory restaurants, Donna Chang’s Chinese Restaurant has a new space in the Henrietta Building at Five Points. The doors opened on July 12 in Athens. Donna Chang’s Restaurant serves variations of Americanized Asian cuisine, the Red & Black reports.

New places on campus

“Downtown is not the only place in Athens getting new spots for everyone to indulge at. Around the University of Georgia campus new restaurants are coming this fall,” the article reads. “The UGA Food Services is expanding the amount of chain restaurants on campus. The local coffee brewery Jittery Joe’s is soon to have a bit of competition with the opening of the large chain coffee shop, Starbucks.”

Along with Starbucks, students on campus can indulge in Panda Express, Einstein Bros. Bagels and a Mexican-themed food truck. In between classes students will have an array of options to choose from to snack on after a long day of learning.
